Active Flag

Athletics – Track and Field were taught to us by Thomas Mullins from Lifford AC for 4 weeks in May 2017.  We had lots of fun throwing javelins, doing hurdles, long jump and even the high jump.  Thanks Thomas from all the classes in Moyle NS.

The Active Flag accolade was achieved by participating in multiple disciplines and activities over recent years.  These included gymnastics, rugby, swimming, Gaelic football, dance, hockey, athletics, safe cycling to school and orienteering.  Moyle pupils have recently been particularly successful in athletics; excelling in track and field events and also cross country at ‘small school events’ organised by Lifford AC.

Donegal mountaineer Jason Black was guest speaker and flag raiser. He spoke to the pupils about the importance of believing in yourself, setting goals and working diligently towards achieving your dreams.  In a highly interactive Q & A session, the pupils really enjoyed quizzing Jason about climbing to the top of Mount Everest.

The question of the day award went to a 3rd class pupil who upon hearing Jason explain how cold it was at the summit of Everest, asked “How many jumpers did you have to wear?”.

At the close of the session Jason invited all 86 pupils to help him raise the blue (active schools) flag and the pupils sang their Active School Song and performed a gymnastic display to the delight of all present.

Moyle N.S. is the second school in Inishowen to be awarded The Active School Status. This signifies a school which promotes Activity and Healthy Choices, not simply through regular sporting events but in daily routines. Our Active School Flag was raised in April 2011 by Irish badminton Olympian Miss Chloe Magee.

Each year the pupils elect a Student Sports Council to help organize and promote sporting activities. A favourite activity is GAME OF THE WEEK  where pupils are taught a new game at breaktimes on a chosen day every week.

Six Nations Trophy Visits Moyle N.S.

We were delighted to be one of six schools in the county to host a visit of the Six Nations Trophy as it tours the province of Ulster for a week.  Shaun Bloomfield, Ulster Rugby Development Officer arrived with the Trophy to the school this afternoon (Tuesday 3rd June). There was great excitement among the pupils. We also welcomed some of the pupils from our neighbouring school Scoil Cholmcille to join in this wonderful event. Shaun gave us a brief history of the trophy explaining that it is made from sterling silver with fifteen panels to represent each team member and three handles to represent the three match officials. The trophy has six different lids and if your country wins the Six Nations tournament then the lid representing them is put on it. This year as Ireland won the tournament the lid has a rugby ball and shamrock on it. The base of the trophy has the emblems to represent each of the six countries that take part in the Six Nations.Shaun also talked to the pupils about the upcoming Ulster Rugby summer camps being held in Letterkenny in August.

Many thanks to Ulster Rugby for bring the Trophy to our school.
